GitHub Fonts
GitHub separates the account username from profile presentation. The public profile has an editable display name and a 160-character bio, while profile and repository README files use GitHub Flavored Markdown.
Choose the right GitHub field first
Start with the field, not the font preview. Account username is restricted or not a styling surface in the current guide; decorative Unicode should be tested only in separate visible-text fields that allow it.
The full field table below covers the remaining GitHub surfaces. The same registry powers both sections so limits and restrictions stay consistent.
Unicode previews for eligible GitHub text fields
These previews are styling options, not proof that a restricted username, handle, account identifier or policy-controlled name accepts decorative Unicode. Use the field guidance above first, then test only the visible text surfaces that fit your task.

Current platform rules
Last checked September 16, 2026. GitHub's current profile documentation separates the editable profile name from the account username, documents a 160-character public-profile bio, and explains that profile/repository READMEs use GitHub Flavored Markdown. GitHub also states that rendered README content beyond 500 KiB is truncated.

Stylish Font Generator is not affiliated with this platform. A field accepting Unicode text is not the same as the platform offering a custom-font feature. Recheck important fields in the current app before publishing because limits and validation rules can change.
Field-by-field compatibility on GitHub
| Field | Current limit / guidance | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Profile name | No current limit stated in current GitHub profile help | Display field — keep identity readable and preview the saved profile |
| Bio | 160 characters | Officially documented limit |
| Profile / repository README | Rendered README content beyond 500 KiB is truncated | GitHub Flavored Markdown display content |
| Status | Verify in current status editor | Optional profile status — current GitHub docs used here do not state a stable text limit |
| Account username | Verify in current account settings | Account identifier — do not treat decorative Unicode as a verified username option |
A platform accepting Unicode in a text field does not mean it officially supports custom fonts. Limits, validation and glyph rendering can change by app version, account type, language and device.
How to use stylish text on GitHub
Start with the exact name, title or line you want to use. Short tests make compatibility problems easier to spot.
Prefer a restrained Unicode alphabet or frame for identity/search fields. Decorative effects are better for optional accents.
Open GitHub, paste into the intended field, save it, then check the result on another screen or device before relying on it.
GitHub tips
- GitHub documents the profile name and bio separately from the account username. Use decorative text only in presentation fields where the saved result remains readable.
- The public-profile bio is currently documented as 160 characters.
- Profile and repository README files use GitHub Flavored Markdown; GitHub says rendered README content beyond 500 KiB is truncated.
- Changing a GitHub username can affect profile links and other references, so do not confuse a decorative profile-name experiment with an account-username change.
GitHub profile and README text examples
Use styled Unicode as a small visual accent in display content, not as a replacement for an account username, repository URL, code identifier or other text that must stay exact.
Keep technical identifiers plain: repository names, command examples, package names, URLs and code snippets should remain exact ordinary text. Decorative Unicode is better reserved for optional profile or README presentation.
